Instead of being a peripheral delivery location, India is now the default talent engine for technology, analytics, and professional services work across industries.

Crucially, the mix of skills is shifting from “IT services” to “digital and AI services”. NASSCOM‑linked work suggests the AI talent pool is expected to more than double to around 1.25 million by 2027, up from roughly 600,000–650,000 in 2022.

One survey found that 91% of Indian employers see rising competition in the job market increasing the need for English proficiency, compared with 81% globally. In practice, this shapes the offshore experience along three dimensions:

  • Retail and consumer goods: Indian teams manage demand forecasting, assortment optimisation, and the underlying platforms for retail media networks and omnichannel commerce.

This accumulated experience means teams in India are increasingly comfortable challenging requirements, co‑creating roadmaps, and linking technical decisions to business outcomes. One of the clearest signals that India’s advantage is maturing, not eroding, is the hiring behaviour of GCCs. Recent labour data shows:

  • GCCs are adding more net new jobs in India than traditional IT services firms and have done so for multiple consecutive years.

  • In one recent period, GCCs added roughly 200,000 employees versus around 110,000 for IT services firms, highlighting a structural pivot towards captive and capability‑led models.

  • According to the India GCC Talent Landscape 2024 report, overall demand dipped by 3–6% quarter‑on‑quarter as GCCs shifted from mass hiring to targeted investments in AI, cloud, and cybersecurity roles.


Compensation data backs this up. GCCs are reported to offer 15–25% higher pay for standard engineering roles and 30–40% more for advanced AI and ML positions versus median market rates, while still remaining well below equivalent Western costs. This allows them to attract top‑tier talent in India and still achieve a structural cost advantage at the enterprise level.

Several regions are positioning themselves as alternatives to India, from Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia and Latin America. Yet most struggle to match India across four critical dimensions:

  1. Scale plus sophistication. India offers both: the ability to ramp large teams quickly and the capability to staff highly specialised squads in fields like generative AI, MLOps, and cloud security.

  2. English‑first professional culture. Business English proficiency is embedded in corporate India, reducing friction in cross‑border collaboration and making India suitable for both internal and customer‑facing roles.

  3. Ecosystem density and resilience. The concentration of IT firms, GCCs, start‑ups, universities, and niche providers in a handful of cities creates redundancy, optionality, and resilience in the talent and vendor ecosystem.

  4. Policy and skilling tailwinds. National programmes around AI, digital public infrastructure, and skills, from IndiaAI Mission to FutureSkills PRIME and “AI for All”, signal long‑term commitment to expanding and upgrading talent.

For boards and executive teams, this makes India less a tactical lever and more a strategic location on the organisation design map: a place where digital, analytics, and AI capabilities can be built and scaled for the long term.

 

A Practical Playbook for Capturing India’s Talent Advantage

Global firms that extract the most value from India are increasingly moving away from siloed “outsourcing contracts” toward integrated operating models. A practical playbook looks like this:

  • Define India’s role in your operating model. Decide which 1–2 strategic capabilities- cloud platform engineering, data and analytics, risk and compliance, or digital operations- will be primarily anchored in India, with clear global mandates.

  • Design a blended structure. Use a GCC or captive model for IP‑heavy and product‑centric work, complementing it with specialist and scaled partners for run‑the‑business operations and experimentation.

  • Invest in leadership and culture. Build strong local leadership benches, ensure India‑based leaders sit on global forums, and align incentives to enterprise‑level outcomes rather than just cost metrics.

  • Institutionalise skilling. Tap into India’s skilling ecosystem, certifications, online learning, government programmes, and university partnerships to build structured learning paths in AI, cloud, and cybersecurity.

  • Measure value beyond cost. Track time‑to‑market, defect rates, platform stability, innovation throughput, and customer NPS alongside cost metrics to capture the full impact of India‑based teams.

Conceptually, the journey looks like:
